The second largest canyon in the US, only after the Grand Canyon, is less than six hours driving from Dallas and awaiting to be uncovered.

The "Grand Canyon of Texas"

Be astonished by the second largest Canyon in the U.S., opening out of nowhere in the middle of the otherwise flat Texas Panhandle.

Temperatures during summer can get really high and it is not the best time of the year to visit the park but… you get to watch the amazing Texas Show, an unique performance with Palo Duro Canyon as a background, happening every year only during the summer months. So, weight the possibilities and decide by yourself. Just remember to bring A LOT of water no matter what you decide.

Lodging in Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Palo Duro Canyon is a destination in itself and I would highly recommend you spend the night inside the park if possible, stopping in Amarillo in your way in and out to Dallas.

The park offers cabins and camping sites, but they are usually booked out months in advance, so plan ahead.

If you decide to head there last minute and cannot score an accommodation inside the State Park for your long weekend getaway, Amarillo offers good hotels and interesting things to do.

Drury Inn and Towneplace by Marriot are your best bets for a luxury stay in Amarillo.

My Place is an affordable and top-rated alternative.

Best things to do in Amarillo.

In Amarillo, visit the legendary Route 66, currently the 6th Street stretch between Georgia and Western streets.
Take a cool pic under the Route 66 sign. Check on Nat Ballroom – once a music venue which hosted big bands in the golden age of Route 66 – and stroll through antique shops, art galleries, pubs and restaurants.

Head then to the neighboring Cadillac Ranch to spray paint real antique Cadillacs without going to jail! The Cadillac Ranch is a worldwide famous public art installation, consisting in 10 Cadillacs from the 40’s- 60’s half buried in the ground and currently colorfully spray-painted by the public. Graffiti is not only allowed but encouraged, and part of the experience. Don’t forget to bring your own spray cans. The Cadillacs can be seen from the highway and entrance is free.

And if you like a challenge (or to eat potentially for free), don’t miss out the Big Texan Steak Ranch. Take their infamous 72 oz steak challenge. If you eat an enormous steak plus side dishes in less than one hour, you don’t pay the bill – ‘simple’ like that (gym pass and medical care not included, lol).

1. Caddo Lake

2. Longhorn Caverns

Unique formations and one of the only places in the world where you can experience complete darkness.

Distance: 215 miles/ 3 h 15 min from Dallas

Texas is home to tons of gorgeous cave systems open to the public, and Longhorn Caverns is a Texas Hill Country gem awaiting to be discovered.

Looking for a Texas nature challenge? Look underneath: if you like exploring caves, you are in the right state.

With tons of cavern systems – at least 3000 known – the Texas undergrounds are a truly caving enthusiast’s playground.

You can find amazing caves to explore virtually in every corner of the State, and cave tours play a big role in Texas nature tourism.

There are tons of options to explore, but Longhorn Caverns is one of my favorites.

The formations are magnificent and distinctive, and the chambers sometimes small enough to make you crouch – what gives it an extra touch of adventure.

In one of the chambers, you can experience complete darkness. The only places in the world where you can experience it are in an abyss at the bottom of the ocean or in a fathomless cave – and Longhorn Caverns happens to be one of those.

Longhorn Caverns are also a historic site. Back in time, The Comanches and the Confederate Army used this cave as a refuge.

Check this post for more things to do in the Longhorn Caverns surroundings and plan your trip (destination # 8, Marble Falls).

3. Devil's Waterhole

Texas most exciting swimming hole and amazing cliff jumping location

Distance: 216 miles/ 3 h 25 min from Dallas

Devils Waterhole at beautiful Inks Lake State Park, in the Texas Hill Country. Cliff-jumping is one of the highlights there.

Adrenaline-seekers and nature lovers will fall in love with Devil’s Waterhole, one of Texas’ most iconic swimming holes.

Devil’s Waterhole is known for cliff-jump, featuring one giant rock with two natural platforms – one higher and the other for the chicken-hearted like me, lol.

Jumping from them at the refreshing Inks Lake Waters in the summer is a feeling out of this world and an unforgettable experience (jump at your own risk!)

Devil’s Waterhole is inside gorgeous Inks Lake State Park, an amazing place for camping, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors.

The Inks Lake State Park surroundings are stunning as well.

It is a unique part of the Texas Hill Country, with a characteristic rocky landscape. And home to two other Texas nature wonders featured in this post: Enchanted Rock and Longhorn Caverns.

Combine the three locations in a single trip for the ultimate outdoor adventure and get wowed by the amazing natural treasures you can find in the Lone Star State!

4. Gorman Falls

An impressive 70-feet waterfall surrounded by nature.

Distance: 188 miles/ 3 h 20 min from Dallas

Gorgeous Gorman Falls at Colorado Bend State Park, TX.

Gorman Falls is the largest waterfall in Texas by height and volume.

A gorgeous 70-feet cascading waterfall running over exquisite travertine formations, covered by lush vegetation.

It’s located in Colorado Bend State Park and can be accessed year-round through a 3-mile out and back beautiful and serene trail.

The best time to visit is after the rainy season. That’s when the waterfall is more likely to be running strong.

Swimming is not allowed at Gorman Falls to protect the travertine formations, which have been shaped for millions of years by mineral deposits.

Still, hiking the Gorman Falls trail and contemplating the waterfalls are worth the trip. It is a sure way to reconnect with nature in Texas.

Colorado Bend State Park also offers wild cave-tours.

Find in this post all the info you need to plan your escape to one of the most beautiful Texas nature getaways (destination # 6).

6. Hamilton Pool

Texas' most stunning swimming hole.

Distance: 218 miles/ 3 h 30 min from Dallas

One of the most stunning Texas swimming holes, in the heart of the gorgeous Texas Hill Country.

Hamilton Pool is simply amazing!

A Texas natural pool formed by a small cascade nestled in the gorgeous Texas Hill Country, not far from Austin.

Hamilton Pool is the most beautiful swimming hole in Texas. And one of the most breathtaking Texas nature preserves, a place anyone living in or visiting the Lone Star State should visit.

Hamilton Pool is accessible year-round. To get there, you’ll have to hike through a small and steep trail (not too difficult; I did it with little kids and a senior).

Swimming is allowed or not depending on the bacteria levels – usually higher after the rain season.

But this place is amazing anyway, either as a swimming hole or a hiking spot for nature contemplation.

Online reservations are almost mandatory – especially during summer and holidays.

If you attempt to visit Hamilton Pool without one, you’re likely to be turned away as there is a daily limit of visitors allowed for preservation purposes.

The rest of the year, the place becomes an oasis of peace and solitude, perfect for nature walks and contemplation.

Jacobs Well is right by Wimberley, one of Texas’s most charming small towns and an outstanding weekend getaway from Dallas.

Find in this post the best things to do in Wimberley and surroundings (destination #9).

8. Enchanted Rock

A giant pink granite dome in the heart of the Texas Hill Country

Distance: 240 miles/ 4 h 00 min from Dallas

One of the most unique geologic formations in Texas, Enchanted Rock is right by Fredericksburg and a must-visit in the Texas Hill Country.

A giant pink granite dome emerging from the grounds in the middle of nowhere, with astonishing panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country.

This is the best way of describing the uniqueness of Enchanted Rock and the reason why it’s on our select list of the best Texas nature destinations.

The hike to the Enchanted Rock’s top is one-of-a-kind and one of the most exciting Texas nature activities.

Summit trail is only about 0.6-mile long, but it’s uphill and completely shadow-less. It’s harsh yet not extreme – I did it with a 2-year old in a baby carrier!

But avoid doing it on hot days like the plague, lol. Bring water, choose a beautiful spring or fall day, and go – the views from the top are rewarding.

And don’t forget to make reservations in advance to the Enchanted Rock Natural Area. Like most Texas nature parks, Enchanted Rock limits the number of visitors, and you might not be able to access it without reservations.

Enchanted Rock is a Texas nature preserve only 20 minutes from charming and popular Fredericksburg.

Find a complete itinerary to both destinations in this post (destination # 14).

9. Pedernales Falls

One of the most unique landscapes in the Texas Hill Country, with cascades and natural pools.

Distance: 240 miles/ 4 h 10 min from Dallas

Pedernales Falls State Park is one of the most beautiful State Parks in Texas. The views are jaw-dropping.

Pedernales Falls State Park stole my heart! It was love at first sight. This place is GORGEOUS, one of the most beautiful Texas nature reserves.

It doesn’t matter if the cascades are running high or low, really.

After raining season, the flowing cascades are breathtaking.

When the water level is low, water-shaped craters form natural pools and an almost lunar landscape hard to beat.

Pedernales Falls also features a beach area along the crystal-clear Pedernales River.

It’s overall a superb place year-round, for simply hiking and breathing in nature or cooling off during summer.

You can camp inside Pedernales Falls and spend a whole weekend there.

Or combine it with other nearby Texas nature reserves at the Hamilton Pool area.

Check this post for the best things to do in the Pedernales Falls surroundings (destination Dripping Springs).

10. Lost Maples

The best place in Texas for fall foliage.

Distance: 350 miles/ 5 h 30 min from Dallas

Lost Maples is one of the best places in Texas for fall foliage.

Lost Maples State Natural Area is beautiful.

It is an amazing Texas nature destination for camping, hiking and one of the best places to admire Texas’s fall colors.

Plan to go there in mid-November, when the fall foliage tends to be at its peak in Texas.

12. Palo Duro Canyon

The second-largest Canyon in the U.S., only behind the Grand Canyon itself.

Distance: 380 miles/ 5 h 40 min from Dallas

Texas also has a canyon, Palo Duro Canyon, and it happens to be the second largest one in the whole US.

Palo Duro Canyon’s first impression is mind-blowing: a huge crater opening out of nowhere in the middle of the otherwise flat Texas Panhandle.

The best way to explore this Texas nature wonder is sleeping inside Palo Duro Canyon, either in a rustic cabin overlooking the canyon or camping at its bottom.

Getting reservations to do that can be tricky – they need to be done months (sometimes a year) in advance-, but the experience and the views are rewarding.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park, aka the Grand Canyon of Texas, is a place for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and stargazing.

You can also zipline over the canyon! And it’s an amazing place for Texas nature photography as well, especially during sunrise and sunset.

The most famous and iconic trail there is the Lighthouse Trail. But there are several options to keep you entertained. Check the trail map here.

The Palo Duro Canyon backroads are said to hold hidden treasures, such as slot canyons – those precious narrow formations you can find in places like Arizona and Utah – and caves.

But no marked trails or guided tours are available to reach these remote areas. Please find more info in this article and explore it at your own risk.

Palo Duro is near Amarillo, known for a few iconic Route 66 attractions, such as Cadillac Ranch.

Find in this post a complete itinerary of Palo Duro Canyon/ Amarillo and plan your nature escape (destination # 1).

13. Padre Island National Seashore

Stunning Malaquite Beach and one of the last undeveloped seashores in the world.

Distance: 440 miles/ 6 h 30 min from Dallas

View from camping area at Malaquite Beach, South Padre Island, Texas.

This place will change your heart on the Texas coast.

Yes, Texas has outstanding white sand, blue water beaches. And they are much closer to Dallas than you think.

The Padre Island National Seashore (don’t mistake it by South Padre, much further away from Dallas) is a nature preserve and bird sanctuary off Corpus Christi, about 6 hours driving from Dallas.

It’s a 70-mile stretch of untouched beaches and natural habitats, with Laguna Madre on one side and the Gulf Coast on the other.

There you can lay on the beach at 5-mile long Malaquite Beach (the stretch closed for driving and accessible with a 2-wheel drive) and soak in nature – I swam side by side with a sea turtle and saw a huge colony of pelicans there.

Engage in water sports at Laguna Madre. Drive up to 65 miles through desert beaches (4-wheel drive required).

And even witness sea turtle hatchling releases from mid-June through August.

You can camp inside the Padre Island National Seashore or stay in one of the nearby towns.

Find more info on the Padre Island National Seashore and surrounding towns, beaches, and attractions in this post.

14. Devils River State Natural Area

Texas most pristine and remote river and an awe-inspiring paddling destination.

Get prepared for a wild adventure at one of Texas’s most jaw-dropping postcards.

Devils River Natural Area is mind-blowing and an awesome outdoor destination for hikers, bikers, and experienced paddlers.

The 37,000 acres natural area is within three different ecosystems. And home to beautiful Dolan Falls, the highest volume waterfall in Texas.

It offers primitive camping, and spending the night under the stars is the best way to explore this gorgeous Texas nature gem.

On your way to Devils River Natural Area, take a short – and worthwhile – detour to explore the majestic Caverns of Sonora.

15. Big Bend National Park

One of the most isolated and serene National Parks in the U.S.

Distance: 530 miles/ 7 h 30 min from Dallas

Santa Elena Canyon at Big Bend State Park. Photo by David Mark.

The Big Bend National Park is humongous, with over 800,000 acres covered by mountains, canyons, desert, river, falls, hot springs, and even pictographs.

It’s one of the most remote and least visited National Parks in the US. A gem off the beaten path where you can soak into nature, solitude, and dazzle.

The Big Bend is beautiful, unique, and a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

Activities there include hiking, rafting, biking, and stargazing – the Big Bend darkness makes it a perfect place to admire the star-filled skies.

Camping and lodges are available inside the park and the best places to stay on a trip to the Big Bend – the closest town is one hour away from there.

Check this post for more info and all the Big Bend must-sees to make the most of your visit (destination # 6).

Find here a detailed winter travel itinerary through Taos, Santa Fe and surroundings, with the best things to do and everything you need to know to plan your winter road trip from Dallas to New Mexico.

14. Colorado Springs, CO

720 miles/ 10h 30m from Dallas

Garden of Gods in Colorado Springs. Stunning! Part of a mind-blowing winter road trip from Dallas to Colorado.

Colorado is beautiful! And a winter road trip from Dallas to Colorado Springs is an amazing way to sample the best the State has to offer

Colorado Springs is a year-round destination. But I’ve been there during wintertime (spring break) and it seemed like the most perfect winter destination from Texas to me. With luck, you can even get some snow, what makes the already stunning landscape even more magical.

There are amazing places to stop along the way between Dallas and Colorado Springs. From the iconic Cadillac Ranch, in Amarillo, to the jaw-dropping Royal Gorge Bridge and thrilling Skyline Drive, in Cañon City.

And Colorado Springs itself offers unbelievable places to visit and awesome things to do – Garden of Gods, Pikes Peak, and Cave of the Winds are some of the ones that should be on your list for this trip.

You can solely visit Colorado Springs or stretch to a ski resort if time allows. World-class ski resorts are only about 2h 30m from Colorado Springs, a perfect add on to your trip if you have extra days to explore Colorado.

Discover in this post all the must-sees and must-visits between Dallas and Colorado Springs, the best things to do in the city. There you’ll also find info about Breckenridge, the winter destination from Texas I’ll cover next.

15. Breckenridge, CO

817 miles/ 12h 30m from Dallas

Skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado, one of the two best ski resorts to travel from Dallas. Get there through an amazing winter road trip from Texas, through Colorado nature beauties.

Winter = snow fun. But us, the ones that live in Dallas and surroundings, need to work a little harder to enjoy this LOL.

We are far from most ski areas, this is true. And while jumping on a plane to reach a ski resort may sound tempting, a long winter road trip from Dallas to world-famous ski areas in Colorado will allow you to explore amazing places along the way, that otherwise you would never get to visit!

I have two favorite ski resorts to visit from Dallas. One of them Taos, already explored above. The other one Breckenridge, in Colorado, listed as one of the top 20 winter destinations in the US. If you are looking for a top-notch ski resort within a driving distance from Dallas, look no further!

Insider Tips

Make online reservations

Reservations to visit the Texas State Parks are required and should be made in advance through their online reservation system.

Plan ahead

For the most sought-after State Parks in Texas, reservations need to be made weeks in advance for day passes. And months in advance for camping spots.

Score last minute reservations

Getting last-minute reservations to visit Texas State Parks can be trick but is not impossible. Leave the “location” field blank in the Texas State Parks reservation system and search to see all State Parks with available passes for the date you wish to visit.

While you probably won’t find spots available in the most popular parks this way, you can end up scoring a last-minute reservation in a hidden gem soon to become your favorite camping or hiking spot in Texas! (I discovered some of my favorite State Parks around this way).

Check for current conditions before hitting the road

Trails, swimming areas and other State Parks facilities can close unexpectedly due to weather increment, water levels or other reasons. Other more specific limitations can be found – dinosaur footprints are not always visible at Dinosaur Valley, for example (it depends on the water levels).

It’s always a clever idea to check on current conditions before hitting the road to avoid disappointments. Along this post you find the links to each State Park website. Click on it and check the alerts in effect (at the top of the page) prior to your visit.

Get a Texas State Park Pass

If you are planning to visit State Parks frequently, getting a Texas State Park Pass just makes sense.

For USD 70.00 you (and whoever is in the car with you) gets free entrance in all Texas State Parks for one year. And you also get camping and State Park stores discounts.

Summing Up

Looking for the best places to camp, hike, and paddle around Dallas?

Try Texas State Parks!

You have 14 options to choose from up to 1h30 driving from Dallas. Each one of them with its own set of features and activities, and special in their own way.

My favorite Texas State Parks near Dallas

Yes, they are all very cool and worth the drive. But I do have my favorite State Parks near Dallas lol! They are marked with starts along the post, but for a quick glimpse these are the ones I would highly recommend you visit and why:

Eisenhower State Park
Has a stunning lake beach (really, impressive) and an amazing camping area overlooking lake Texoma.

Dinosaur Valley State Park
Real dinosaur footprints along the riverbed! Oh, and a gorgeous crystal-clear river framed by sandy beaches. And a great trail system as well.

Lake Whitney State Park
Crystal-clear lake, with beautiful beach areas. The lake bottom is made of limestone, what prevents it from being muddy as other lakes – under the right weather conditions, of course.

Lake Mineral Wells State Parks
Top-rated trails, rock climbing and unique Penitentiary Hollow rock formation.

Tyler State Park
Tall pine trees! It’s a landscape you wouldn’t expect to find in Texas, specially so close to Dallas. The fall foliage reflecting in the lake there is beautiful. Shady trails and water activities, such as swimming and paddling, make Tyler a local favorite under the Texas heat as well.

Go enjoy the outdoors!

Enjoy nature to the fullest without going too far! In this post you discovered the 14 best places in the Dallas surroundings to do that.

Best Family Travel Destinations in Texas and Surroundings

10 kid-friendly family travel destinations to visit in Texas and surroundings, perfect for all ages!

10 kid-friendly vacations from Dallas, fun for the whole family!

These top family-friendly trips in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma will wow kids and grown-ups alike.

“The Greatest Legacy We Can Leave Our Children Is Happy Memories.”
– Og Mandino.

The (not that) hard task of pleasing the whole family

Traveling has always been my passion.

It didn’t change when I had kids – in fact, hitting the road with my kiddos to discover new destinations is one of my favorite ways of building family memories. And, oh, what beautiful memories!

Wherever I go, I take my kids in tow.  Whenever I plan a trip, I try to mix activities for both kids and adults or, even better, find the perfect cool things to do that all age groups can enjoy.

The win-win attractions.

Those that keep kids engaged, so they don’t start annoying the parents (making it impossible for us to enjoy our time, let’s face it).

Nor are solely focused on the children, to the point of boring us adults and killing our will of traveling with kids for good, lol.

My personal favorite family travel destinations in Texas and surroundings

During the past few years, I’ve been traveling around Dallas, Texas, and the surrounding States, exploring and testing different destinations with my family.

While all the trips were somehow worth the experience, some were especially remarkable for my little ones.

Here I share the ones that, to date, best did the job of wowing everybody in the family (as well as some items at the top of my bucket list).

Travel destinations my kids keep asking me to visit again and that I would totally repeat.

Explore!

Find below the 10 top travel destinations for families within a driving distance from Dallas, according to my and my children’s totally biased opinions – no scientific method here.

1. Glen Rose, TX

Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim

Distance: 75 miles/ 1 h 20 min from Dallas

Real dinosaur track along Paluxy River's riverbed, at Dinosaur Valley State Park.

Glen Rose is a no-brainer for families with kids of all ages.

It’s super close to Dallas, home to a beautiful state park with real dinosaur tracks, and Texas’ best safari drive-thru, Fossil Rim. You can even sleep in a cabin inside the wildlife center surrounded by animals!

Find in this post the details and a complete itinerary to Glen Rose (destination # 1).

It’s a year-round destination. But before heading there, check with Dinosaur Valley State Park if dinosaur tracks are visible – subject to weather conditions and water level.

2. Davis, OK

Turner Falls, Arbuckle Wilderness Park and Chickasaw Tribe

Distance: 130 miles/ 2 h 00 min from Dallas

Animal feeding from the comfort of your car at beautiful Arbuckle Wilderness, right next door to Turner Falls.

Another must-visit destination for families, Davis is a small town in Oklahoma surrounded by amazing attractions: the largest waterfall in Oklahoma, a rustic safari-style zoo, and a native American tribe cultural center.

A travel destination only 2 hours away from Dallas, where you can, among other things, hike into small caves, dive into a waterfall, feed wild animals, and watch a Chickasaw native dance.

Tons of fun and culture and a superb place to create family memories!

Find in this post a complete itinerary to Davis (destination # 2), with all the info you need to plan your trip.

My favorite times of the year to visit Turner Falls are spring and fall to enjoy the amazing colors that make this natural setting even more stunning.

Even if it’s too cold to swim, you can still enjoy nature and hiking.

Plan to arrive at Arbuckle Wilderness Park early.

On our visit we were the first ones to enter the park and OMG, animals were corralling our car to be fed! So cool!

I imagine it wouldn’t have been the same if we had arrived after a lot of people had fed them, and they had their stomachs full, lol.

Avoid visiting the area during summer and holidays. It can get really crowded and spoil the experience.

3. Austin

Barton Springs Swimming Hole, Kayaking, Stand-Up Paddling, and Bat-Watching

Distance: 195 miles/ 3 h 00 min from Dallas

A unique natural spectacle takes place in Austin every summer, with millions of bats flying from under Congress Bridge at sunset.

This is an amazing family trip to take from May through September. Austin is one of the coolest Texas travel destinations and offers things to do for all ages.

The must-sees and dos when you’re traveling with kids to Austin are splashing into Barton Springs at Zilker Park, kayaking, or stand-up paddling through crystal-clear Barton Creek and Colorado River.

And watching millions of bats leaving from under Congress Bridge at dusk (trust me on this one, it’s impressive and a one-of-a-kind experience you will never forget).

But Austin offers much more than that!

Here you’ll find a complete post dedicated to this must-visit Texas travel destination, with the top things to do in Austin and tips on how to make the most of your trip.

4. Llano, TX

Enchanted Rock, Longhorn Caverns, and Colorado River Canyon Cruise

Distance: 229 miles/ 3 h 30 min from Dallas

One of the coolest hikes in Texas. My kids, that are not much into hiking to be honest, simply loved it!

If your family enjoys the outdoors, you’ll love this trip.

Llano is only a place to spend the night – the fun lies in its surroundings! From there, you are 30 minutes away from both Enchanted Rock and the Longhorn Caverns, two very cool destinations for all ages.

Enchanted Rock is a unique formation, a pink granite dome in the Texas Hill Country’s heart.

The hike to the top is doable with kids under the right conditions (read this post, destination # 11) and rewards you with amazing views. Unforgettable, I would say – or at least it was for my kids, who keep me asking me when we’re going to go up the “Giant Rock” again!

The Longhorn Caverns are stunning. And one of the only places in the world where you can experience complete darkness.

The guided tour through the cavern requires you to lower your head in some stretches. And my kids found it hilarious that mom had to move like a ninja carrying a 3-years old in a baby carrier, lol.

Near Longhorn Caverns, you’ll find Buchanan Lake and can take a scenic cruise along the Colorado River Canyon there.

This trip is best suited for cooler weather months, between late October and early April.

Hiking Enchanted Rock under the heat makes it 10 times harder (it’s all the way up, and there are absolutely no shades along the way).

5. Murfreesboro, AR

Crater of Diamonds State Park and Diamond Old West Cabins

Distance: 234 miles/ 3 h 45 min from Dallas

Diamond Old West Cabins, near Crater of Diamons State Park. Simple and rustic, but offering amazing activities for kids.

A low-profile lodge with Old West-themed cabins and tons of family activities – including tepees with firepits to make s’mores! And a nearby place to become a miner for a day and dig in the dirt for diamonds and other stones.

Do I need to say anything else?

Oh, and my own kids loved it so much that they recently even offered to trade their birthday parties for a weekend there.

I would say that it’s probably their favorite quick getaway from Dallas to date!

For full details, check this post (destination # 9 – Crater of Diamonds State Park).

The best time to visit is any time of the year but summer – the crater of diamonds is an open area, with no shades, and digging under the excruciating heat is not advisable or fun!

6. Gruene

Natural Bridge Caverns, Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, and River Tubing.

Distance: 240 miles/ 3 h 40 min from Dallas

One of the nature attractions in the Gruene surroundings, the Natural Bridge Caverns tour is a great family experience in Texas.

Gruene makes everyone happy!

Parents can enjoy the amazing and lively historic town square, with the oldest dance hall in Texas, lots of live music, wineries, good shops, and restaurants.

Kids will have a blast exploring a cavern, feeding the animals at Natural Bridge Wildlife Center – did you notice a pattern here? Lol – and tubing the Guadalupe River.

For more things to do in Gruene and further details, check this post (destination # 10).

Another year-round destination – go during warmer months if you want to do the river float thing, though.

But have in mind that Gruene and its surroundings get really crowded during holidays (which place doesn’t?), and river tubing cannot be as pleasant during these times.

7. Houston and Galveston

NASA, Kemah Boardwalk, and Moody Gardens

Distance: 240 miles/ 3 h 30 min from Dallas

The NASA is a must-visit place for families, and combined with other cool local attractions makes a great weekend getaway.

The Houston-Galveston combo makes a remarkable family trip, I swear!

They are not exactly the most celebrated travel destinations in Texas, I know.

But knowing where to go and focusing on the best things to do, Houston and Galveston can be awesome places to visit and are only 40 minutes apart.

In one shot, you can visit the NASA mission control center and astronaut facility training. Indulge in old-fashioned fun at the Kemah Boardwalk.

And visit Moody Gardens, a themed amusement park and non-profit. It offers, among other attractions, an aquarium, a rain forest exhibition, and a seasonal water park featuring a white-sand beach and a lazy river.

Check here a complete itinerary to Houston, including a side trip to Galveston.

The best time to visit to do the whole thing is summer, but you can enjoy the NASA area attractions year-round if you decide to skip the Galveston part – Houston has enough cool attractions to keep you entertained for a weekend.

8. Port Aransas, TX

Beaches, Pirate Cruise, and Dolphin Watch Tour

Distance: 389 miles/ 6 h 20 min from Dallas

Dolphins in Texas? Head to Port Aransas and embark on a Dolphin Cruise.

Hitting the beach is one of the best ways to ensure fun for everybody in the family.

At least in my humble opinion, as I love being by the beach and my kids do not need much more than sand and water to have the time of their lives!

The beaches near Port Aransas are the best ones to visit from Dallas – magnificent beaches, a reasonable driving distance so, if you’re feeling like burying your feet in the sand and building sandcastles, head there!

Port Aransas is a small coastal town with a cool beach vibe, good restaurants, and entertainment options.

From there, you can embark on a Dolphin Watch Tour and a Pirate Cruise.

The beach right at Port Aransas is not the best. Still, within a short driving distance, you can reach Mustang Island and South Padre Island National Seashore (aka North Padre Island), with amazing beaches you wouldn’t expect to find on the Texas coast.

No need to say this is an ideal trip for warmer weather months! I would say anytime between April and October.

The cool thing is that you can avoid the crowds even during holidays knowing the right spots to go.

Check this post to know the beaches to visit and avoid in the Port Aransas coastline – it’s based on a trip to Port Aransas right on Labor Day.

9. Malaquite Beach, TX

Camping ON the beach!

Distance: 442 miles/ 6 h 30 min from Dallas

View from camping area at Malaquite Beach, South Padre Island, Texas.

Malaquite is a jaw-dropping beach. Think white sand, deep blue ocean, and lots of pelicans – it’s a bird sanctuary.

It’s my favorite beach to visit from Dallas when I have a short time frame.

The distance, 6h30 driving, is doable on a long weekend.

And it’s a must-visit place to fix for good the mistaken idea many people have that there are no good beaches in Texas – so untrue!

Malaquite Beach is part of the South Padre Island Seashore and the only beach in the preserve accessible without a 4-wheel drive.

You can easily visit it as part of a trip to Port Aransas. But for a unique and unforgettable experience, camp right at the Padre Island National Seashore by the beach

Honestly, I don’t know of any better way to build family memories than sleeping under the stars and having a stunning beach as your backyard!

The best time for visiting is late April through early October, to enjoy the summerish weather. I would avoid August, though, as sleeping in a tent under the Texas heat does not sound very appealing to me.

10. South Padre Island, TX

Dunes, white sand beaches, dolphins, sea turtles, and (enclosed) alligators!

Distance: 560 miles/ 8 h 00 min from Dallas

I'm not the bravest person around, but holding an alligator at South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center somehow felt safe lol. No need to say my kiddos went crazy!

I confess it took me a while to visit South Padre Island. More precisely, 5 years.

Why would I drive eight hours to hit a Texas beach when I could drive two hours more and get to Florida?

But then life gave me a puppy.  And while looking for summer dog-friendly vacations, I stumbled again upon South Padre Island.

I thought, “why not give it a try?”.  And I’m SO glad I did!

This was by far my favorite family vacation in Texas to date.

The beaches beautiful, with white sand and clear water (forget about Galveston’s brown water). The town was charming and full of great waterfront restaurants. And the natural environment and activities jaw-dropping and inspiring.

We walked on white dunes – you can ride a horse on them as well!

I visited Sea Turtle Inc, where we saw gorgeous sea turtle rescues and learned about the importance of recycling (seeing my 5 years old collecting plastic from the beach the next morning and saying “because now I care about the world” was worth the trip by itself).

My kids got to hold an alligator and a snake at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center!

And much more.

Find in this post my recommendations on the 10 top things to do in South Padre Island, including tons of family-friendly activities to engage in there.

Edwin K. Atwood Park

South Padre Island aerial view. Miles and miles of unexplored beaches.

Looking for something more private and scenic? Drive about 7 miles/ 15 minutes east and spend the day at Edwin K. Atwood Park instead.

It’s a scenic beachfront park with several amenities – such as beachfront covered pavilion, picnic tables and restrooms – and 20 miles of undeveloped and drivable beaches.

For the utmost adventure, drive on the beach (4-wheel drive recommended) and find your own private slice of paradise.

The South Padre Sand Dunes are a must-visit protected area, with gorgeous dunes and a peaceful beach.

Its entrance marks the end of the road. You’re not allowed to drive on the dunes, so plan to hike them (bring plenty water!) and then set up your tent by the beach to enjoy solitude and stunning views.

the South Padre Sand Dunes are near South Padre Island Adventure Park, where you can experience horseback riding on the beach (more info in the next topics).

Sea Turtle Inc

Sea Turtle Inc. performs an amazing rehabilitation work and is a must-stop whenever visiting South Padre Island, Texas.

Sea Turtle Inc. is a conservation center and animal protection organization.

They perform an amazing job rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured sea turtles and they work can be seen firsthand – including the beautiful turtles they care for – at their rehabilitation center.

Visiting the center is an educative and inspiring experience. Witnessing their hatchling releases – currently suspended due to COVID-19 – an unforgettable moment. A must-stop in a summer trip from Dallas to South Padre Island.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is right next door and visiting them both together is highly recommended (see next topics).

Horseback Riding on the Beach

Horseback riding on the beach during sunset is a once in a lifetime experience you can try in South Padre Island.

Looking for once in lifetime experiences? Try horseback riding on the beach at South Padre Island.

Horseback riding with dunes and the ocean as a backdrop is a hard to beat summer activity, and a sure way to build everlasting memories.

South Padre Island Adventure Park, near the South Padre Island Sand Dunes, is one of the providers offering this type of adventure on the Texas Coast.

Make sure to schedule your horseback riding tour to the end of the day and top off the already amazing experience with a stunning sunset over the dunes.

Dolphin Watching Tour

Make sure to include a dolphin watch tour in your travel itinerary to South Padre Island. Astounding!

Dolphins in Texas? You bet! And you can spot them right at the South Padre Island.

There are several operators offering Dolphin Watching tours in the area, at different times of the day.

Fins to Feathers is a great option and operates with small groups. The Original Dolphin Watch offers one of the most popular dolphin tours in South Padre Island.

Dolphin Docks is another interesting alternative. It departs from Port Isabel and you can take advantage of your day trip there to visit the Lighthouse (next topic) to cross both activities off your bucket list in a single day.

Make sure to bring your camera and if possible, schedule the sunset tour, for amazing photo ops.

Lighthouse at Port Isabel

Port Isabel Lighthouse is a Texas Gulf Coast landmark and offers amazing panoramic views from the top.

Port Isabel is right across the bridge from South Padre Island and a beautiful place for an afternoon stroll.

Head there to explore Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site, the only lighthouse in the Texas Coast open to the public. If you’re into historic spots and amazing views, you’ll love it.

The idyllic lighthouse offers great photo ops, has an informative visitors’ center telling its history and is surrounded by cute shops and restaurants. Make sure to climb the stairs to the top for amazing views of the bridge connecting the continent to South Padre Island.

Dolphin Docks is only a few steps from there and offers Dolphin Watching tours. Combining both activities can be a great way to spend an afternoon in the South Padre Island surroundings.

**NOTE:

Learn about nature. Stroll through their amazing suspended wooden boardwalk to breath in the beautiful wetland surroundings. Climb up the tower for stunning views. Feed gators and tortoises.

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is right next door from Sea Turtle Inc., so take advantage of your visit to the area to check on both places.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a local gem almost untouched by man.

Things to do in this nature preserve include hiking, cycling, and fishing. The area is known for coyotes, falcons, and ocelots. Alligators, deer, roadrunners, and other birds can also be spotted.

The pavilion offers amazing bay views from the top.

It’s the place to be if you love nature, wildlife, solitude, and photography.

Waterfront Restaurants

A visit to the beach is not complete without enjoying a delicious meal or some drinks overlooking the ocean.

South Padre Island offers a handful selection of waterfront restaurants, both overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and beautiful Laguna Madre.

To watch the sunset over Laguna Madre, head to Lobo Del Mar Cafe, Laguna BOB or Long Board Bar and Grill. For amazing ocean views, Clayton’s Beach Bar and WannaWanna are your best bet.

Alabama is a popular beach destination among Dallasites, with some people even claiming they prefer it over the Florida Gulf Coast as a summer road travel destination from Dallas.

I recently had the pleasure to go there and finally understood why all the hype about it.

Best Beaches in the Alabama Gulf Shores/ Orange Beach Area

I’ve loved loved loved the Alabama Gulf Coast beaches.

Well, not all of them, of course.

But knowing where to go, you can spend the day burying your feet in white sands at uncrowded beaches with crystal-clear water.

Beaches that you certainly wouldn’t expect to find within a driving distance from Dallas.

Here I share the beaches I liked the most in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and surroundings.

The ones I will certainly be visiting again when I return to the Alabama Gulf Coast (something I’m planning to do soon!):

Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park beach palm trees, white sand, blue ocean, and great amenities make the perfect combo for a leisure day at the beach.

Gulf State Park is an outstanding natural area.

There you’ll find amazing campgrounds, beautiful trails, and one of the best beaches in the Gulf Shores.

Head to the Gulf State Park Pier area to enjoy an amazing day by the beach.

The perks there are great facilities (public parking, showers, clean bathrooms, and concessions), beautiful views, and nature surroundings – I prefer that over Orange beach and its tall hotel buildings.

Walk the pier (USD 3.00 pp) for amazing sunset views.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins playing in the ocean.

West Beach

Loved uncrowded and beautiful West Beach, only 15 minutes away from more touristic areas.

West Beach is another amazing beach area, considered by many to be Alabama’s best beach. A 6-mile beach stretch, quieter and more residential than the other beaches on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Offering beachfront rentals, a laid-back vibe, and an absolutely gorgeous landscape, it is the place to be if you’re not much into Orange Beach’s touristic vibe.

Don’t take me wrong: Orange Beach is great, with beautiful white sand and crystal-clear water.  But I prefer to run away from more crowded areas. And West Beach proved to be way more my style.

Fort Morgan

Vast and virtually desert beaches and an amazing Civil War fort make Fort Morgan a must visit in a trip to the Alabama Gulf Shores.

Historic sightseeing and vast undeveloped beaches make Fort Morgan an amazing place to spend the day in the Alabama Gulf Shores.

Pack a picnic and head to Fort Morgan State Historic Site. Take a self-guided tour through the over two-centuries-old Civil War fort and breath in the amazing views.

Then head to the virtually private beach and enjoy your picnic, nature, and solitude overlooking the ocean.

On your way back to Orange Beach, stop by The Village Creamery, a top-rated local ice cream shop.

Perdido Key State Park

Right by the Florida/ Alabama border, Perdido Key is another amazing place to enjoy a day by the beach near Orange Beach.

Ok, technically not in the Alabama Gulf Coast. But pretty close to it – 15 minutes away – and totally worth the drive.

Perdido Key State Park is in Florida, only a few miles away from the Alabama border and a simply stunning area to enjoy a day by the beach. The beach is jaw-dropping, and it has amenities such as parking, showers, and restrooms.

Less than 5 minutes driving from there, on your way back to Orange Beach, you’ll find Flora-Bama.  A laid-back waterfront oyster-bar and live music lounge between the state lines, perfect to finish the day watching the sunset.

Best Waterfront Restaurants in the Alabama Gulf Coast

If you’re looking for an unbiased review of the absolute best restaurants to try in the Alabama Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, you’ve stumbled on the right page.

These were the places that did the best job wowing me during my visit, and that I highly recommend you trying not only for the food but especially for the uniqueness and amazing beach vibe of each one of them.

Here are the must-try restaurants in the Alabama Gulf Coast:

The Gulf

I loved The Gulf beach vibe. Grabbing a delicious seafood meal over the counter and enjoying it at charming tables on the sand by the ocean sold me immediately on the place.

If you go to the Alabama Gulf Shores and don’t stop to have a meal by The Gulf, you’ll be missing out.

The Gulf’s vibe is pretty amazing, with tables, lounge chairs, and palapas on the sand overlooking the ocean.

Gulf Shores is an over-the-counter-style restaurant and entertainment complex featuring a pub and a cute store with amazing and unique branded items and souvenirs. Grab your food, choose one of the lounge seats and soak in the vibe and ocean breeze.

This is the place that made me fall in love with Orange Beach and realize I was somewhere really, really special. I won’t say more, lol.

Fisher's at Orange Beach Marina

Fisher's at Orange Beach Marina has the ideal balance between style and beach vibe IMO!

Picture yourself in a boat taking a Dolphin Tour. You cruise the ocean watching dolphins playing around you with the sunset as a background.

Then you come down the clouds – or disembark – and drive exactly one minute to reach one of the most beautiful restaurants in town, Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina.

There you take a stroll through a gorgeous marina and shop high-end branded souvenirs while you wait for your table. When the hostess calls your group, you’re guided to a comfy table in a unique chic-coastal setting and have the best meal of your trip.

Nothing more to add. Just try it.

Lulu's

Lulu's is a super fun place and a perfect spot to have lunch near the Gulf State Park.

Lulu’s Gulf Shores is a super cool waterfront restaurant and entertainment complex. A must-visit in the Alabama Gulf Coast, especially – but not only – if you have kids in tow.

It’s more touristic than the other two restaurants mentioned here, but still highly recommended.

The restaurant area is large and overlooks a beautiful canal. Kids can have fun at the sandy playground, amusement park, and arcades.

You can buy cool souvenirs in their branded store. I did buy a pack of local beers with honey as a gift, and they were so good I ended up drinking all of them myself – not at once, lol.

Lulu’s is not far from the Gulf State Park, and combining both can be an amazing way to spend a day at the Alabama Gulf Shores.

Best Fun Activities in Orange Beach and Surroundings

Come for the beach, stay for the fun. The Alabama Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area offers amazing entertainment options.

Dolphins? Yep. Alligators? They got it. First-class entertainment? You bet!

Here are some superb add-ons to spice up your trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast and build everlasting summer memories:

Sunset Dolphin Cruise

A Dolphin Cruise is a must when visiting Orange Beach. Several companies offer tours at different times of the day. I highly recommend the sunset tour.

Yep, you can see dolphins in Orange Beach.

More specifically, you can take a boat ride and be followed by them, what I don’t know about you but to me sounds pretty incredible.

I took the Dolphin Tour with Southern Rose Dolphin Cruises and had a great experience.

They promise you dolphins, and they work hard to deliver the promise – we took a long time to find dolphins, but the crew persevered, and when we did find them, oh boy, it was AMAZING.

What I did – and recommend – was to take the sunset tour.

It allowed me to enjoy the day by the beach, watch the most amazing sunset ever from the boat surrounded by dolphins (!!!) and top off with dinner at Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina, right next door.

The Wharf

The Wharf is a top-notch shopping and entertainment district in Orange Beach, perfect for a summer night stroll. Photo by divemasterking2000 / CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)

If you need a break from the beach and want to feel a little more urban, head to The Wharf, a high-end shopping and entertainment center.

With over 60 stores and restaurants, and an iconic Ferris Wheel – the largest in the southeast – The Wharf is Orange’s Beach official entertainment district and a great place for an evening stroll after spending the day on the beach.

You can also take a boat tour from there – the Wharf is home to a large marina – and engage in fun activities such as zip-lining and mini-golf.

Alligator Alley

Spice up your summer travel adventure in Orange Beach feeding alligators at Alligator Alley, an unforgettable and top-rated experience.

Not for the faint of heart, this top-rated attraction is surely unique. If you’re looking for an exotic experience, make sure to include Alligator Alley in your itinerary.

It is a family-friendly attraction and a great place to experience the outdoors and interact with reptiles and other animals – they also have snakes, turtles, and other creatures there.

Stroll through the raised boardwalk over a beautiful swamp for wildlife viewing in their habitat. Feed the alligators. It’s an unforgettable experience and one that keeps people in awe and coming back.

Summing Up

Superb white sand beaches. Outstanding waterfront restaurants. Dolphins. Swamps. The Alabama Gulf Coast has it all and more and is an amazing summer vacation destination from Dallas.

You discovered 10 amazing things to do in the Alabama Gulf Shores and Orange Beach areas in this post. Including 4 top beaches, 3 must-try restaurants, and 3 must-visit attractions.

Add these places to your itinerary, and you will certainly love your trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Best things to do in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores

For the best beaches and a perfect day by the ocean, head to Gulf State Park, West Beach, Fort Morgan, and Perdido Key State Park.

For unforgettable dining experiences, try The Gulf, Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina, and Lulu’s.

For summer fun at its finest, a Dolphin Cruise, The Wharf, and Alligator Alley are your best bet!

Best Texas Beaches to Visit from Dallas

4 Texas beaches that are totally worth the trip

(and 3 you should skip altogether!)

Find out the most amazing Texas beaches within a reasonable driving distance from Dallas.

I was told several times I should not waste my time with Texas beaches. That I should head to Florida or hop on a plane instead. I’m glad I was stubborn enough to ignore those (so) untrue statements!

Life is short to wait for the next long vacation. And better on the beach. So, after doing some extensive research, I embarked on a personal mission to discover the best Texas beach within a reasonable driving distance from Dallas. One that could be reached in a long weekend, when I got beach sick and felt like burying my feet in the sand.

And I’m happy to announce that I succeeded!

On my quest for the perfect Texas beach, I spent a long weekend exploring the Port Aransas – Corpus Christi coast, around 6 hours away from Dallas. There I discovered not only one but 4 amazing summer spots. And a surprisingly gorgeous beach that took the game to a whole new level!

Here I share with you the bumps and humps of my adventure, so you can avoid tourist traps and enjoy the best beaches around. And my soulmate Texas beach, a hidden gem you must include in your bucket list now!

Keep reading and find out the best way to explore the area and have the time of your life. Fast your flip flops and enjoy!

4 Must-Visit Texas Beaches Ranked

Those 4 Texas beaches are truly special, for different reasons, and worth the trip. They are all within a reasonable driving distance from each other and can be covered in a single visit to the Corpus Christi or Port Aransas areas.

I’ve ranked them (in descending order) according to my personal taste and experience but go check and decide by yourself which is your favorite!

Rockport Beach

4th Place
3.5/5
Rockport Beach is Texas first Blue Wave beach and a great spot for families with little kids for its calm waters.

Rockport is Texas only Blue Wave Beach. Meaning you can expect a super clean beach with all amenities – including handicap access – and swimmable waters.

Rockport was one of the most instagrammable of all beaches visited during the trip. The palapas, smooth sand and blue waters make the perfect background for snapshots, giving the impression you are in the Caribbean!

Rockport is a bay beach, so there are no waves. The water is shallow and warm during summer. There are play areas and a pavilion with picnic tables and showers. So, it is a perfect family destination and it was the favorite beach of all for the little ones that joined me in this adventure.

I liked it. And would be back. I think that it is worth visiting and for some people it can even become their favorite beach spot in Texas.

But Rockport beach was not my favorite beach among all visited because I prefer more untouched places and I missed that “beachy” vibe. It felt more like a man-made beach to me.

Padre Island National Seashore's North Beach

3rd Place
3.7/5
North Beach is in the east end of beautiful Malaquite Beach and you can drive on it!

North Beach is at the northernmost section of the Padre Island National Seashore, right before Malaquite Beach. It is a 5-mile beach stretch opened to driving (no 4×4 required, watch weather and beach conditions and use caution though).

Expect dunes, white and soft sand and clear blue waters. The visual is amazing.

This is your beach if you want the visual of Malaquite Beach (see bellow) but prefers or needs to park on the beach. And if free camping sounds good to you.

The downside is that there are no amenities – you must drive to Malaquite’s Beach Visitor Center for restrooms and showers.

IMPORTANT: This is the North Beach inside the Padre Island National Seashore. Don’t mistake it by the North Beach in Corpus Christi! Use this GPS coordinates: 27.4774, -97.2742

Mustang Island State Park

2nd Place
4/5
Mustang Island is the perfect place if you're looking for solitude. After driving a few miles onto the beach you'll be all by yourself.

Mustang Island State Park is beautiful. It has over 5 miles of shoreline, meaning that even in the most crowd days you can find your secluded spot under the sun (the pic above was taken during Labor weekend!). The sand is soft, the water is clear, and you are surrounded by dunes, with no signs of civilization other than a trash can here and there.

Mustang Island State Park’s beach is divided into two sections. One for the pedestrians, to the left, usually crowded and not very nice. And one for cars, to the right, crowded in the beginning – where the camping areas are – but very desert and pleasant if you keep driving for one or two miles. Go for the second option and you won’t regret. A 4-wheel drive is recommended, but we used a regular SUV and did just fine (weigh the risks before jumping in though).

Park access fee is USD 5.00 per person (children 12 and under are free). At the entrance of the park you will find amenities such as restrooms and showers. There is no concession inside, so bring drinks and snacks.

This was the second beach I visited in this trip and it wowed me. I wasn’t expecting to find such a nice beach in Texas because of what I’d heard about Texas beaches and due to my own personal experience (Galveston…).

It could have become my favorite Texas beach if I hadn’t found in the following days one that took the game to a whole new level.

I’ll definitively be back (actually I already did lol, we liked it so much that we stopped by next day to watch the sunset).

Malaquite Beach

1st Place
5/5
A slice of paradise in the Texas Gulf Coast, Malaquite Beach is at the beautiful and unique Padre Island National Seashore.

Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow wow.

This beach made me wonder if someone had put something in my breakfast. Ridiculously white and soft sand. Dunes. Crystal clear turquoise blue ocean. Spotting a sea turtle in the water while swimming. Stumbling upon a huge band of birds with hundreds of Pelicans and Seagulls during a beach walk. Feeling basically alone at the beach right in the middle of Labor Weekend.

I didn’t expect to find such an amazing beach in Texas, not even in my wildest dreams.

Malaquite Beach is so far my favorite Texas beach. And for good my top one considering the beaches within a reasonable driving distance from Dallas – 6h 30 m, doable for a long weekend.

It is at the Padre Island National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world, with 70 miles of seashore (don’t mistake it by South Padre Island, much further from Dallas). Entrance fee is USD 10.00 per car.

Malaquite Beach is the only stretch of the Padre Island National Seashore closed to driving and with amenities such as showers, restrooms and a visitors’ center. The other sections are a 60 mile stretch after Malaquite Beach that requires a 4-wheel drive and a 5 mile stretch before Malaquite Beach suitable for regular cars (see North Beach above in this post)

When you get to the beach, walk to the left from the Visitors Center to beat the crowds. I visited Malaquite Beach during Labor weekend and the stretch of beach right in front of the parking lot access was not nice and too crowded, but I walked less than 5 minutes to the left and it was paradise!

3 Texas Beaches to Skip

(but that worth a stop for other reasons)

Those beaches didn’t wow me. Actually, I even disliked them.

But they all offer something special beyond the beach itself, so I would recommend you including them in your itinerary if you have extra time or if the experiences mentioned bellow speak to you.

And staying in Port Aransas to explore the area, despite of the beach there not being the best.

Port Aransas Beach

Port Aransas is a charming coastal town and a great base to explore the other beaches mentioned in this post.

The beach right at Port Aransas is not bad. But with so many nicer beaches within a driving distance – the four I mentioned above – I wouldn’t waste my time there. Port Aransas beach is not as clean as the other ones. The water not as clear and the sand not as white, so…

But still, I highly recommend you using Port Aransas as your base to explore the area.

Port Aransas is a charming seaside town with good restaurants, nightlife and entertainment options. It is within a short driving distance from the best beaches in the Gulf Coast: Malaquite Beach, Padre Island Seashore’s North Beach, Mustang Island State Park and Rockport.

Port Aransas has that laid-back beach vibe you are probably looking for when heading to the beach, with still tons of things to do. Much better than staying in Corpus Christi (a big city), in my opinion.

While in town, try one of the following restaurant options: Crazy Cajun, Venetian Hot Plate or La Playa. All recommended by a local foodie. Make reservations in advance, especially during summer and holidays. I tried the Crazy Cajun and loved it. It is a unique experience, with seafood served directly on the table to be eaten with your bare hands. Cool and tasty!

For a treat, make sure to stop by the Desserted Island Ice Cream, if only for the ambiance. I loved the vibe and decor. And their famous warm brownie sundae, of course!

Bob Hall Pier Beach

Bob Hall pier views and oceanfront restaurant make it a great place for lunch or a drink.

On the day of my visit the beach by Bob Hall Pier was way too crowded and it turned me off.

It is true that it was Labor Weekend. And that crowds should be expected. But with amazing and much more tranquil beaches such as Padre Island’s North Beach, Malaquite Beach and Mustang Island State Park only a few miles from there, I wouldn’t spend the day on this beach.

I would still recommend you stop by Bob Hall Pier though, on your way back from Malaquite Beach or North Beach. You can actually drive to Bob Hall Pier from North Beach on the sand.

The views from the pier are gorgeous. You can walk the pier to watch the sunset (USD 3.00 fee per person), fish or just take in the views. And even have a meal or a drink at the waterfront Mikel May’s restaurant.

North Beach in Corpus Christi

Have lunch in Corpus Christi at an amazing patio overlooking USS Lexington and visit it afterwards.

North Beach is a big city beach. So, you can imagine what to expect. The sand is not soft, the water not really clean and the surroundings very urban. Not my favorite type of beach.

But Corpus Christi’s North Beach hides a Texas gem and that is worth the trip.

North Beach is home to the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier, used by the American Navy during the Second World War. It is a massive and impressive ship, currently a museum. You can visit it or admire it from Pier 99 restaurant outdoor patio, overlooking the USS Lexington.

I would recommend a stop for a late lunch at Pier 99 before heading back to Dallas. It is a laid-back beach style restaurant with a beautiful scenery. Not the best meal I’ve ever had, but food was tasteful, prices reasonable and I loved the vibe and the views.

Summing Up

There are amazing beaches within a driving distance from Dallas. Bam!

No, you don’t need to leave the state or drive 10 hours to South Padre Island to find a decent beach. Instead, drive about 6 hours to Port Aransas and explore 4 beautiful beaches in the Texas Gulf Coast: Malaquite Beach and North Beach at the Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island State Park and Rockport Beach.

It is not a short drive. I know. But it is one totally doable in a long weekend.

It took me 3 days to explore the 7 beaches mentioned here. Not all the beaches were worth the stop, so you can read this post and focus solely on the best ones. And take advantage of the tips above to enjoy your visits to the fullest. So, make your plans and spend the very next holiday unwinding on an amazing Texas beach!

If you happen to know of a superb Texas beach less than 6 hours away from Dallas not mentioned in this post, PLEASE let me know. I’ll be more than happy to check on that.

And after visiting the beaches I mention here, please let me know your impressions and findings! Did you like Malaquite Beach as much as I did? Did you prefer the pedestrian beaches or the ones you could reach driving? Have you found any hidden gems worth sharing?
